Abstract

The book “The Lord of the Flies” by Willian Golding, an English novel, Nobel Prize winner for Literature presents a dystopia based on the story of a group of boys who, after a plane crash, stop on a desert island and need to survive on their own. The article aims to analyze the moral development of the characters in the book based on Jean Piaget's theory on moral development, verifying how they position themselves in the face of the dilemmas imposed by living on the island. Moral development occurs through successive processes of reorganization of the psyche, due to dialogical social situations, which produce, or not, qualitative advances in human morality. The Piagetian method is used in the analysis of narratives and in the literary context of each character and/or group. The analysis of two groups of children, who separate and fight each other, demonstrates that the agglutination occurred from common psychological characteristics. Thus, the first group was marked by an autonomous leadership whose members were able to work for cognitive decentering, sharing ideas, sculpting what Piaget calls moral autonomy; the second group has a leader concerned with himself, unable to attend to the community, demonstrating cognitive and moral slippage and its members are characterized by the need to be guided and protected, manifesting psychic immaturity typical of heteronomy. Heteronomy is considered a moment of high vulnerability to the influence of others, which can lead to group behaviors that are not suitable for collective interaction; while, moral autonomy is given by a personality style that allows the attribution of the collective good ahead of individuality.
