Dermatolofilose generalizada em Equino

Abstract

This report describes the activities performed during the internship period which took place at the Central of Biotechnology for Animal Reproduction - Federal University of Pará - CEBRAN/UFPA, from March 13 to May 24, 2023 under the supervision of the Veterinarian Teacher Dr. Aluízio Otávio A. da Silva and guidance of Teacher Dra. Katyane de Sousa Almeida, totaling 412 hours. The activities were developed at CEBRAN/UFPA and through it, it was possible to participate in the activities carried out at the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Medicine of Animals of the Amazon - Federal University of Pará - BIOMEDAM/UFPA. The activities were performed in the areas of large animal medicine and animal reproduction, the area that presented the largest casuistry (80.25%). Intra-class activities were also followed, for example, participation as a listener in theoretical classes and primarily discussion of clinical cases. During one of the clinical case discussions, an interest emerged to describe, with more details in the report, the case of generalized dermatophilosis in a male horse of the Pure English Blood breed, brown coat, 12 years old and weighing 450Kg, donated to CEBRAN by the Military Police (PM) of Castanhal-PA. The chief complaint was the presence of scabs on the animal's body and generalized alopecia. Physical examination, complete blood count, and parasitological examination of skin scrapings were performed. On inspection, rounded, brownish, moist, easily detached crusts and detached hair in clumps were observed on the buttocks, dorsal region of the abdomen and thorax, and neck, and generalized alopecia. In the result of the examinations it was not possible to establish the etiological agent causing the disease and therefore the diagnosis of generalized dermatophilosis was made therapeutically. In this scenario, we opted for a topical treatment with a 10% Povidone Iodine bath diluted in water and systemic treatment with intramuscularly (IM) administration of penicillin (20,000 IU/Kg). After three weeks of treatment, the animal showed good response to the established treatment protocol and no longer had lesions of dermatophilosis. Furthermore, the internship was enriching, providing the opportunity for a first professional experience, the day-to-day experience of a Veterinarian, the practice of the knowledge acquired at university, increasing the network of contacts and preparing the intern for the future job market.
