O insólito nos espaços literários de O Travesseiro de Penas, de Horácio Quiroga, e Mater Dolorosa, de Olívia Sarmento

Abstract

The present dissertation constitutes a historiographical study of horror literature and its unusual spaces, using as a basis the short stories "O travesseiro de penas", by the Uruguayan Horacio Quiroga and "Mater Dolorosa", by the Minas Gerais writer based in Gurupi-TO Olívia Sarmento. The reading addressed here converges to the symbolic analysis of the house and the unusual attitudes taken by the characters in both tales, showing important correspondences. To this end, the work is based on three chapters: in the first, the origin and consolidation of the "horror" genre are arranged with examples of correspondence in the present day; in the second, the houses stand out as a literary space of relevance within these genres in the light of Bachelardian theory; in the third, the literary spaces of Quiroga and Sarmento are compared, highlighting their symbols and their representations of the unusual, thus establishing the central objective of this work. In addition, other important definitions for analysis such as Gothic Literature and other considerations about Fantastic Literature and fear will be suggested in order to support the work. With this, it will be possible to identify the originality of the research.
