Transexualidade na mídia: reflexões sobre a cobertura jornalística das pessoas transexuais em portais de notícias

Abstract

This dissertation aimed to reflect on the journalistic coverage of transgender people on wide- reaching Brazilian news portals. The transsexual population is subject to various rejections due to the socially imposed binary model of what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman in society. Thus, the following research question was raised: how is journalistic coverage of issues involving transgender people constructed? The specific objectives were to study the representation of trans people in journalistic narratives, the sources consulted and to analyze whether the news adopts a human rights perspective or reinforces transphobia. This is a qualitative exploratory research in which bibliographical research and content analysis were used. The chosen portals were R7 and UOL Universa and the news collected was within the period of time between January 2022 and February 2023. Content analysis was carried out based on three variables: sources heard in the news, presence social name in the news and presence of birth name in the news. Next, the categorization was carried out into "news that reinforce stereotypes" and "news that present a perspective on the rights of the trans population". Then, separately, the variables were surveyed in each portal, illustrated through graphs. The study of news that involved trans people on such different portals allowed us to understand to what extent the content violates or does not violate the rights of the people to whom the news refers and whether it alleviates or encourages the culture of transphobia. Furthermore, the research highlighted the need to promote more conscious journalism that is more attentive to gender issues, especially with regard to transsexuality, as a way of increasing the representation of this population in the media and combating stereotypes and misinformation in society.
