Resumo: | Soybean (Glycine max) cultivation plays a crucial role in the world economy, occupying 122,664 million hectares globally in the 2019/2020 harvest, with production of 337,298 million tons. In Brazil, soybeans revolutionized agriculture, becoming the most significant crop, driven by the development of cultivars adapted to the vast territory. Initially restricted to the south, genetic advances allowed its expansion to other regions after the 1970s. The MATOPIBA region (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia) stands out in Brazilian production, contributing around 12.3%. In the 2019/2020 harvest, Brazil led world production with 12.4845 million tons, followed by the USA. Bahia stands out in the northeast region, leading in planted area (3.097 million hectares) and production (10.102 million tons). Climate change and phytosanitary challenges drive the importance of genetic improvement to increase productivity. Companies like GDM Seeds play a crucial role in developing high-quality varieties. The internship carried out at the Porto Nacional-TO branch involved activities in the product development department, intermediating research and market. This included conducting trials, organizing field days, phytotechnical and phytosanitary assessment, harvesting and analysis of results. Faced with agricultural frontiers close to the limit, the focus on genetic improvement and the supply of quality seeds stands out as a crucial strategy to face challenges and meet the growing demand for soybean production. |
