Abstract

The present research examines the ways of life of ribeirinhos dwellers, their fishing equipment, and resources in the traditional community of Vila Cabral, municipality of Piçarra, located on the banks of the Araguaia River in Pará, Brazil. It is an exploratory and descriptive study conducted through on-site visits for data collection, observations, and descriptions, mainly focusing on lifestyles, fishing, and techniques. Subsequently, the research was processed in an office setting, analyzing the field-collected material and organizing it into textual form. The study observed the techniques and knowledge they possess in dealing with the Araguaia River, the ribeirinha identity, and their 'passion' for their profession. It's worth noting that they maintain an organization and communication system composed of points and lines that intertwine in the formation of their territory. Over the years, changes have been observed in the tools and objects used in artisanal fishing techniques, the time spent by fishermen in the river, and an aging demographic among those dedicated to fishing.
